but I'll purchase future filters directly from Whirlpool to ensure I am getting the better performing filter
I previously used Whirlpool filter model 4396510. I was hesitant to try these new filters based on the many negative reviews. However, I decided to give it a chance. Upon inspection of the EveryDrop filter, I noticed that the tip end design had changed, as noted by many other reviewers. The two filter designs have the same tip. However, the EveryDrop filter has a longer filter body which requires notches to be included in the body design near the tip to permit proper interfacing with the internals of the refrigerator. This discussion is covered by other reviews, so I won't add to it here. Another issue came to light as I read the packaging of the EveryDrop filter. The package for the EveryDrop Filter 5 listed filter models EDR5RXD1 and EDR5RXD1B. It also stated a the filters met particulate Class II (1-5 micron). The EveryDrop website, and every other publication I found on a quick internet search, specifies particulate Class I (0.5-1 micron) for these filters. I called Whirlpool customer service to find out why there was a difference in the listed particulate class. The representative grabbed a filter off the shelf and read particulate Class I on the package. Additional discussion uncovered that EDR5RXD1B is a Canadian model number and is not included in the description of the US packaging. Also, the representative stated that the US filters are made in Mexico, but my filter listed Taiwan as the manufacturing location. I have to conclude that Amazon sent to me Canadian filters that are different from US filters. I will be paying a little extra money, but I'll purchase future filters directly from Whirlpool to ensure I am getting the better performing filter. To anyone who decides to take a chance on these filters, be aware of the different performance levels that are available and make sure your are getting the filtration level you are expecting. As I have come to expect from Amazon, they permited free return of the filters and full refund of the purchase price. Amazon's customer service continues to outperform most other companies.

OEM 4396510; Pricing is against the consumer; Sizing mismatch for some needing 4396508
Yes these are OEM replacements that fit well into the refridgerator for which they're designed. However, you have to be very careful as Whirlpool is advertising these as a replacement for both filter parts 4396508 and 4396510.The filter I pulled out of my fridge was OEM and had model #4396510 listed on it. It fit this perfectly. However there are many complaints that people who need model 4396508 do not find this filter to fit; yet others find it does fit. My best guess is that model 4396508 underwent an unpublished revision at some point, and so you're out of luck if you need 4396508 "original version" and not 4396508 "newer version".Short story is, if you need 4396510 this is the one to buy, and if you need 4396508 then do some close photo comparison and make sure you compare your old vs. new filter once it arrives in case you need to return. Also avoid poorly reviewed 3rd party sellers as there are many generics posing as OEM.Final comment is that these are overpriced, this is to push you to buy them on a "discounted subscription" plan from Whirlpool directly so they can increase the reliability / stability of their cash flows. Great for their business, bad for the consumer.

NOT made in the USA
These water filters are NOT made in the USA. The product packaging clearly states that they are made for Whirlpool by 3M in Mexico. Close but no dice. Maybe the older version was made here in the states, but not anymore. This should be corrected in the product description as there are many of us that actually care about where something that filters our water is made. Minus 1 star.Secondly, these are not packaged by Whirlpool and sealed in a way that they could not be tampered with. Everything else you buy these days is hermetically sealed in plastic so that you have to cut them with scissors to get them open - so why not these? Especially in the case of a product like this where you have to trust that what you're getting is genuinely New, and your family's health may count on it, I believe this is a substandard form or product packaging. Minus 1 star.I was generally pleased with the previous version - only time will tell if the changes made to the product/packaging/manufacturing will affect water quality, taste or performance...

Marginal Performance at the Price, Poor Support from Whirlpool
I have purchased a few of these filters before and they seemed to work ok, though price continues to go up. I recently installed one from a two pack that I bought on Amazon and the flow was very poor. When I tested the water coming for total dissolved solids (TDS), it measured in the 180's, though the tap water was only in the 150's. I replaced this filter with the second filter and things got better, though TDS was still in the 90's. I called the toll free number on the packing to see about getting a replacement and they (Whirlpool) said that I had to return to Amazon, since I bought it from them. When I pressed them about the return, they insinuated that Amazon is not actually authorized to sell their products (I have a hard time believing that) and if I want to have my products warranted, I had to buy from them. Unfortunately for me, I had bought these for several months in advance of needing them, so my return window with Amazon was closed.Bottom line on this filter: There are likely others that work as well or better for less, but if you decide to buy them, buy them one at a time and install them before your Amazon return window closes. Hope this helps!

EXACTLY the same size as the old filter! NSF 42, NSF 53, and NSF 401 certified.
I almost didn't purchase this filter because there is a highly uprated review saying this filter isn't the same as the old one. But I found it unreasonable a company would manufacture a replacement filter that is a different size than their old one. With Amazon Prime same-day delivery and easy returns, I decided to take a chance. They are EXACTLY the same size as the Whirlpool 4396508 filter it replaced! It is a PERFECT fit.The cheaper off-brand clones don't come with NSF 53 or NSF 401 certification. They can only filter up to NSF 42 standards, so you simply won't get the same level of protection against biological contaminants.
