A fair quality, really cool watch. But not $580!
**2/16/19 - 2nd Update is after original review**So, this is one of those scenarios that presents a bit of a moral quandary: I hate it when things have an absurdly jacked-up "list price" in the hopes of generating perceived quality or luxury, but then are being sold for the more realistic and practical price. The tactic is dishonest and misleading, and I don't appreciate it. This is exactly one of those items and I almost passed it up at first for that very reason. I really liked the looks of it though, so I decided to go ahead and take a chance. (Maybe the first time in my life I've done so...) I'm not familiar with Haurex and this would be their one chance to show me that they have integrity. The verdict:$580 ??? Hell no.$48 ??? Totally worth it! (I have no idea how I got so lucky with that price. Great deal!!)Pricing tactics aside, I have to say that this really does seem like a quality watch. Of course, you have to apply perspective with that though. There will be the inevitable jackass who's going to compare this to a Tissot, a Tag Hauer, or some other $4000 watch, and then only give this one or two stars because of it. That's equivalent to comparing a Nissan Leaf to a Tesla Model S. They're not in the same class, end of story. But for the price, I think it's tough to find anything to complain about with this watch. (I'll explain my rating later...)In case you didn't happen to notice, this isn't a small watch. It's 50mm in diameter, not counting the crown. That's barely under 2", which I think is large in just about anyone's book. Fortunately though, they kept the proportions right by giving it a big band also. And not just wide, but thick. The band on my watch is about 3.5mm thick (as best I can tell), which is substantial compared to a lot of others. This definitely is not some fake Chinese junk that's simply stamped as genuine, it's the real thing, and it's nicely made.Oftentimes with watches heft can give the impression of higher-end materials and "quality". If that's what you're looking for or expecting then you'll be disappointed because even though it's big, it's not heavy. I initially thought the case was made of aluminum, but the description here says stainless steel. There's no way to test it without causing damage and my case back tool doesn't open wide enough to take the back off and look inside, so I can't say what it really is. What it's NOT though, is cheap plastic. It's anodized nicely too and, after wearing it around for about a week and bumping it into things a number of times, I can't find any signs of the black case losing it's color.Speaking of color, when I ordered this I actually thought that the accent color was yellow, but it's actually green. This caught me by surprise, (doesn't the pic on here look yellowish??), but that wasn't a bad thing. It looks really cool, yellow or green, so that's okay. As for the actual color tone: look at the top of this page, at the green words "In Stock.". Now imagine that green with just a tiny touch of a neon green tone. That's the actual color. It's kinda bold, it's pretty cool, and I really like it. :)Okay, I obviously like the watch a lot, so why only 4 stars? I have to admit that the bigger part of the reason is due to that pricing tactic. It screams of "deception" to me, and I don't like that. The other (smaller) part of the reason is due to one of the spring pins holding the band to the case has a little bit of play in it. I'm not sure if it's a case of the hole that the pin seats in being to large somehow, or if it's that the tip of the spring pin is somehow to thin. Either way though, if I shake my wrist around, I can hear it rattling. Just barely though, and the room has to be completely quiet, but it's there. (I'm not sure how I even noticed it...) But there you have it, that's the one thing that I've been able to find to complain about, trivial though it is.In summary: I'm glad I bought it. Plain and simple.**UPDATE**I've had this for almost a year and a half now, and I'm happy to report that I still really like it a lot. It's held up perfectly and I don't have a single complaint. I just changed the battery for the first time a few months ago.Disregarding what I originally paid, at this point I would say that this is actually a very reasonable deal anywhere around $100. $130 might be pushing it a little, but I still don't think it would be regrettable even at that. (Just not as exciting of a score! haha)2/16/19 - It's been close to 4 years now. I wear this watch about once a week, on average, and I've had absolutely zero problems with it. That large guard around the crown occasionally catches when reaching through something, but it's not enough of an issue to register as a complaint. All-in-all, money well spent!
