20 years later, this star-studded saga (Richard Chamberlain, Barbara Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer ) is still the second-highest-rated TV miniseries ever. What's amazing, though, is that no soundtrack LP came out, even though this epic featured some of Henry Mancini's best-loved themes. This 2-CD set rights that wrong-prepare to revisit the Outback and enjoy the LONG-overdue release of this beautiful Mancini score!

A little disppointed :-(
I’d been waiting for them to release the soundtrack of “The Thorn Birds” since 1983. I never understood why they didn’t do it as the mini-series had such a fantastic following and everyone was wanting the soundtrack.During 1983 they released the two singles the first was of the main theme from “The Thorn Birds” with the dulcimer present, (the B side was “Luke and Meggie”), the second single was of the Love theme which was played by Juan Martin and the Philharmonic Orchestra, (the B side was “The Last Farewell”).After those singles had both done well I thought releasing the soundtrack would be the next step but it never happened. :-(I’d to wait another 11yeas before the soundtrack was finally released and then it was remastered by Erick Labson. With this CD you get a lovely little booklet that tells you about the late and great Henry Mancini and there's also an excellent article about "The Thorn Birds".If you know the DVD soundtrack as well as I know it then you’ll notice that certain instruments are missing off some of the tracks whilst others have had a few instruments added that weren’t in the original soundtrack. Plus there are parts of the score missing like other fans have noticed. :-(Whilst I’m over the moon they finally released the soundtrack I’m still disappointed in the way it was done, as it’s not how the late and great Henry Mancini orchestrated it.

Heartbreak
I watched the TV series of the Thornbirds avidly and very emotionally when it was first shown on television. I have watched re runs since and still get moved. The story is in the music. I can picture the wide open spaces, the heat and the dust and the heartbreak. It is wonderful and I shall play it forever.
