From the Inside Flap "Tyll", der neue Roman des Erfolgsautors Daniel Kehlmann - er veröffentlichte u.a. "Die Vermessung der Welt", "Ruhm", "F" und "Du hättest gehen sollen" - ist die Neuerfindung der mythischen Till-Eulenspiegel-Figur: ein großer Roman über eine aus den Fugen geratene Welt, über die Verwüstungen durch den Krieg und die Macht der Kunst. Ein Meisterwerk der Sprache, der Bilder und der Phantasie. From the Back Cover "Tyll", der neue Roman des Erfolgsautors Daniel Kehlmann - er veröffentlichte u.a. Interesting historical novel
I found the description of the historical time quite amazing. But I could not deal with the backwards and forwards of the timeline too well. Of course that's what made it so rich.

A total flop! Do not buy this book.
Kehlmann's book about C 19 measuring of the earth is a fascinating read. However, this one reveals his incompetence as a disjointed, boring novelist. Bereft of much historical material to give his narrative structure, he flits from place to place, time to time, and produces a lengthy mystical, pretentious dud.

A Masterpiece of German Literature. Kehlmann should be on track for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
A masterpiece of German literature. I haven't enjoyed reading a German novel as much since I read "Die Bekenntnisse des Hochstaplers Felix Krull" in high school.

Just meh.
I had high hopes for this book [I am reviewing the German audio version] but in the end I found the book only meh. Ulrich Noethen's performance is outstanding but the story itself is lacking. Kehlmann uses a number of post-modern literary tools such as literary ventriloquism, historiographic meta-fiction and intertextuality. Unfortunately, it is not done very skillfully. I kept thinking that there is just nothing new or intriguing about the way the story is told. Maybe that was intended, not sure but for me it just was not enough to really like the book. It felt like Kehlmann was trying too hard.
